Pancho's case: laryngeal stent implantation, a surgical challenge and a hopeful ending.
This case is reported by Dr Patricia Ibaseta, director of the Ciudad de Lugo Veterinary Hospital, who was in charge of Pancho's care and coordinated the diagnostic and therapeutic process.

In veterinary medicine, every patient teaches us something new.
"Pancho, a 7 year old feline patient, came in for consultation with obvious signs of respiratory distress. His guardian, concerned, told us that his breathing had become noisy and difficult. On clinical examination and complementary tests, the results were perfect and retroviruses were ruled out. However, the chest x-ray revealed an obvious laryngeal stenosis" says Dr. Patricia Ibaseta
"As his condition was relatively stable, we scheduled a scan under anaesthesia the following day. During sedation, some movement was noted in the left larynx, but an overgrowth on the right side was obstructing approximately 70% of the larynx".
Given this finding, an incisional specimen was taken for histopathology, the subsequent report of which confirmed the presence of an inflammatory granuloma.
With this diagnosis in hand, further anaesthesia was arranged for cleaning of the affected area and implantation of a 7mm x 21mm silicone laryngeal stent (Reference VSTX07-20) in order to restore the laryngeal opening and improve Pancho's respiratory function.
In addition, the removed tissue was sent back to pathology for further analysis.
The key to success: Collaboration and precision
Every complex case requires not only surgical skill, but also the support of a truly committed team. Therefore, I would especially like to thank Dr. Patricia Ibaseta, director of the Veterinary Hospital Ciudad de Lugo, for her unwavering willingness to collaborate in Pancho's case and for her impeccable work in obtaining and organising the diagnostic images.
The synergy between professionals is key to successfully face the most demanding challenges.
The images below document the surgical process, from stent placement to the final result. Each step was carefully planned to ensure that Pancho had the best chance of recovery.

Cases like Pancho's remind us of the importance of innovation and precision in veterinary surgery. Laryngeal stent implantation in felines remains an uncommon procedure with inherent challenges, but with the right equipment and meticulous planning, it is possible to change the lives of our patients.
Pancho's journey is not over yet, but his evolution fills us with hope. We will continue to monitor his progress and adjust his treatment as needed, with the firm conviction that every effort adds up to restore his quality of life.
At ABTVet, our mission is to continue exploring and applying innovative solutions to improve the health of our patients. Cases like this reinforce our commitment to excellence and drive us to continue growing as professionals.
We move forward, for Pancho and for all those who trust us!
