Stent sizing:
A laryngeal stent of the appropriate size is selected for the dog, taking into account the dimensions of the larynx and/or trachea.
The size of the endotracheal tube that would be used to intubate the patient can be used as a reference.
Stent implantation:
The laryngeal stent is inserted through the patient's mouth with the help of forceps. The stent is folded and clamped and then the stent is guided into the larynx.
The stent is carefully inserted through the dog's mouth. Once in the correct position in the larynx, the stent is released from the forceps and the stent expands and naturally attaches itself to the laryngeal wall. The studs or spurs on the stent help the fixation and perfect placement, two of them must be positioned cranial to the vocal folds.
Verification and adjustment:
The position of the stent is verified under direct vision from the mouth, by laryngoscopy or X-rays, and adjustments are made if necessary to ensure optimal positioning. Given the materials from which they are made, ABTVet stents can be moved as many times as necessary until the physician is satisfied.
Some doctors prefer to suture with a stitch on each side to ensure fixation.
Instrument removal:
Once the stent is in place, the instruments are removed from the dog's mouth.
Laryngeal stent implantation in dogs: no surgery needed. Any vet can insert and secure a stent in the larynx to help your dog breathe better, with verification by laryngoscopy or X-rays.
